Port Nelson is the largest and main settlement in the Bahamas’ Rum Cay. Rum Cay used to be known as Santa Maria de la Concepción and Mamana. Its current name is believed to come from rum cargo on a shipwreck.As its name suggests, West Palm Beach, Florida is home to some spectacular beaches. There’s plenty to do on the waterfront, including Sunfest, the largest waterfront musical event in the state of Florida. But beaches aren’t the only things that West Palm Beach has to offer. There’s something for everyone in this small southeastern Florida city.
Rum Cay was originally populated by the Lucayans, who called the island Mamana. On the north of the island, there are caves with native Lucayan carvings and drawings. Some historians believe that Rum Cay was later the site of a landfall made by Christopher Colombus during his voyage in 1492. Others believe that the island Colombus called Santa Maria was a different island entirely, however
Rum Cay was formerly a haven for pirates because of its deep drop-offs and reefs. This makes the area ideal for diving. There’s also a marina where you can dock a boat. The best-known tourist attraction on the island is the wreck of the HMS Conqueror, which was a 101-gun man of war that was built in 1855 in Devon, England and was used during the Crimean War. The ship was lost at Rum Cay’s Sumner Point Reef in 1861 and there were, fortunately, no casualties. You can visit the wreck, but nothing can be taken from it, as it’s considered the property of the government of the Bahamas.
