Cat Island is an island in the center of the Bahamas. The island’s first settlers from Europe were British loyalists fleeing the United States following the Revolutionary War. There is some debate as to the origins of the island’s name. Some believe that it’s named after the pirate Arthur Catt, while others think the name comes from the large population of cats that live on the island.
Cat Island is home to Mount Alvernia, which is the highest point in the entirety of the Bahamas. Perched on top of Mount Alvernia is Mt. Alvernia Hermitage, a stone monastery hand-built by Father Jerome, who was both a hermit and the architect of the hermitage and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. The Hermitage is accessible to visitors via a steep, rocky path up the mountain.
There’s a clear lake that’s fed by Ambrister Creek called the Boiling Point. It gets its name from the bubbles and burps, which feed local legends that there’s a sea monster living under the surface but in reality are caused by tidal conditions. There are other watering holes around the island that have their own legends, including Mermaid Hole, said to be the home of a mermaid, and Big Blue Hole, which is thought to be the home of a horse-devouring monster.
